Bona
The Swedish floor-finish house. Water-based, certified for indoor air, and the floor varnish we'd put in our own homes.
Bona has been making water-based floor finishes from Malmö since 1919. They were the first major floor-finish house to commit to water-based systems across the entire range, and the indoor-air-quality certification they carry (EMICODE EC1 PLUS) is the gold standard for nurseries, schools and homes with small children. We stock the Bona Mega Varnish (single-component polyurethane, our go-to for domestic wooden floors), the Bona Wood Floor Polish (a maintenance coating for previously finished floors), and the full Bona floor-cleaning range — concentrate, spray mop, refresher and refill cartridge.
On a typical Bona floor job we arrive at the bare timber, sand through 40 / 80 / 120 / 150 grits with a roller sander and edge sander, vacuum, tack-rag, and apply three coats of Mega Varnish with a water-based applicator. Cure time is 8 hours between coats and 7 days before rugs go back down. The finish is tough, slightly amber, and shows the grain rather than burying it under a plastic film.

About the brand
Common questions.
Is Bona Mega Varnish water-based?
Yes. Bona Mega Varnish is a single-component, water-based polyurethane. It's low-odour, low-VOC and certified EMICODE EC1 PLUS for indoor air quality. Suitable for domestic and light-commercial wooden floors.
How long does Bona Mega Varnish take to cure?
Eight hours between coats and seven days before you put rugs or furniture back. The floor is walkable (in socks) after eight hours. The full cure (when the floor is at full hardness) takes seven days, so we recommend a light touch for the first week.
Can I apply Bona Mega Varnish over an old varnish?
Only if the old varnish is sound, fully bonded, and you sand it back to a dull finish first (120-grit). If the old varnish is flaking or unknown, sand back to bare timber. We can advise on-site — bring a small offcut to the workshop and we'll test.
